21 June 2025 – New flock of pullets

The new pullets have decided not to wait for the days to get longer before laying – every day I collect a record number of eggs. Nearly 11 dozen today. The Totara flock (below) are getting ready to retire. After a year they start laying every second day and the time and expenses make keeping them uneconomic. They are available for anyone to pick up for a small koha.

Some of the hens from the Tōtara Flock out in the paddock hunting for food.

Time for a top up of floor chip, it gets dirty quickly in the rain. Jonathan and helpers found a mix of fig tree prunings, dead tree lucern and storm tree fall.
